From the amazing ceremony location to the sweet DIY details, today’s Oakland wedding from Blair Dugan Floral Design is everything you could love in an outdoor summer wedding! The bride DIY’d the paper goods, including the amazing place card and menu bread bags that decorated each place setting. We of course are obsessed with the heirloom wax flower crown from the bride’s grandmother!
We started off by picking a venue that was warm, inviting, classic and a part of our community- the Piedmont Community Hall. The venue features a lush, green, tree-filled ceremony area, a great patio for dinner and a beautiful, old Spanish building for dancing. The colors and decor just fell into place from there. We chose navy and white with greenery for our colors- a palette we hoped wouldn’t show it’s age over time. For the invitations, that I designed and assembled, I wanted to incorporate vintage-Oakland. On the back of each page were vintage Oakland postcards to tie in our love for our home town. The wedding had a classic, vintage vibe that we absolutely loved.
My grandmother’s diamond an sapphire watch was wrapped around my bouquet. I also wore the crown my grandmother wore on her wedding day. I’m not the type of bride that dreamed of what my wedding dress would look like which made choosing one really easy for me. I just went with the one that I felt the most myself in, had a little bit of sparkle, and I could dance in without restrictions. My sister, the MOH, chose the bridesmaid dresses. The only requirements from me were that they were short and navy. As long as my girls were comfortable, I was comfortable.
The ceremony was, hands down, our favorite part of the day. Melissa, our officiant, asked Mat and I to answer some questions about one another that she incorporated during the ceremony. It was so personal and fun and fun-ny. There was lots of love and laughter which made for a ceremony that our guests raved about.
Our florals were STUNNING. Blair Dugan, of Blair Dugan Floral Design, happens to be a close friend and she went all out for us. Everything from the eucalyptus garland that lined the aisle, wrapped the stair rails and draped down the tables, to the navy berries in the centerpieces that were imported from New Zealand, it was more than I ever imagined.
Basically it was all DIY by me! My favorite item wasn’t a splurge in cost, but a splurge in time! I created and printed the custom dinner menus that doubled as bread bags. Guests found their table assignments by looking up their name in the vintage card catalog.
