Small weddings are some of our favorites and today’s captured by Femina Photo + Design on an NYC rooftop is perfectly sweet! Just look at that view!
Stephen and I wanted a small, intimate wedding. There were only 15 people there, including us. The criteria for picking a location was 1) beautiful views of the city 2) good food. The Standard in the East Village was the perfect location. We live in the East Village so it felt like we were getting married in our backyard – except we were on a rooftop with gorgeous views of the entire city
I had tried on a lot of dresses from stores all around the city and was having a hard time finding anything I liked. The dress from BHLDN was not part of their “wedding collection”; I believe it was considered a Bridesmaid dress. As soon as I tried it on I knew it was perfect. It was so simple which was exactly what I was looking for. I had it altered to take the sleeves from full length to 3/4 so that it would have more of a spring/summer feel.
We wanted everything about the day to have meaning and feel really special. We decided to have my best friend officiate the ceremony – this was one of the best decisions we made. She was able to customize our ceremony in the most beautiful way. We also picked every song that the violinist played throughout the ceremony and the cocktail hour. I walked down the aisle to “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and when we walked back together she played River by Leon Bridges (we had gone to a Leon Bridges concert on our first official date).
We kept the decor very simple, only decorating the one large table that we ate dinner at. I am an event planner, and I knew I wanted to be able to set up the space myself the day of the wedding. My partner and I spent the afternoon creating flower arrangements and decorating the table. We used gray silk linens, copper charger, marble place cards with copper calligraphy, lots of candles, and flower arrangements created in glass and copper hurricane vases that we turned upside down. I went to the flower market in NYC the day before the wedding and picked out all the flowers. We used lots of white peonies, ranunculus, sweet peas, and anemones. For greenery we added eucalyptus leaves, hanging wisteria, and unripe blueberry branches.
My favorite part was the ceremony. We chose not to do a first look. The excitement of turning the corner to walk down the aisle and see each other for the first time was so awesome. Stephen and I both wrote our own vows; it was such a special moment to recite those vows to each other in front of our families.
