Vintage glam lovers get excited! Today I am sharing this stunning art deco wedding in New York captured by Mikkel Paige Photography. The venue is beyond breath-taking, with that old world style you can’t help but fall for. And I love their adorable PB&J wedding favors!
I’m a big reader and the Great Gatsby has always been one of my favorite books, so Peter let me have my 1920s inspired wedding. We must have looked at a dozen wedding venues and I kept waiting to get ‘the feeling’, but nothing seem to fit. The Metropolitan Building kept coming up in my Google searches for unique wedding venues so we finally decided to take a look. We knew from the moment we walked in the doors that it was where we were going to get married.
Growing up my grandmother always wore a charm around her neck that was supposed to symbolize the turning of a page. When I got engaged, she gave it to me as I was turning the page to the next chapter in my life. We affixed it to the zipper on my gown and it was my absolute favorite accessory.
We basically had three priorities while planning. The first was to keep it intimate. We wanted to be able to spend time with every single one of our guests so it was important to invite only those closest to us (we were fortunate that our parents were very supportive of not inviting that 4th cousin that we hadn’t seen since we were 16). Also, as a part of that, we had my brother get ordained and marry us. Having one of my best friends in the world pronounce us man and wife was truly memorable. And pretty darn hilarious. The second was that we just wanted our guests to have fun. No sit down dinner or assigned seating; champagne during the ceremony; cocktail hour with a live jazz band; and lots and lots of dancing.
Obviously marrying my other half and being able to share all of our joy and excitement with the people we love the most were the best part of the day. We wrote our own vows and listening to Peter read his was a feeling I can’t describe.
Because Peter is from Denmark it was important for us to honor both Danish and American traditions. We started out the first dance with our song “40 Day Dream” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and then surprised our guests halfway through by switching to the Danish Wedding Waltz. I will never forget the roar I heard as our Danish family and friends realized what was happening. The day turned out to be everything we wanted it to be and more.
The venue was so eclectic that we didn’t need much decor, so we stuck with a simple black and white theme. Since we met on St. Patrick’s day we added a splash of emerald green.
Since our initials are P B J we wanted to give out little jars of peanut butter and jelly as our favors but we had a hard time finding them. So we basically turned my dad’s house into a canning factory, filling 120 little jars halfway with peanut butter and then jelly. We slapped on some stickers and tied little wooden taster spoons monogrammed with a B. We still have a few in our fridge!
Another favorite moment was the ‘speech’ given by Peter’s best friends. At our joint bachelor/bachelorette party in Denmark they brought us to a local recording studio and had us record ‘I had the Time of My Life’ from Dirty Dancing. Little did we know that they were going to play it at the wedding! Peter and I may have the worst voices on the planet, but instead of cowering in embarrassment we decided to own it on the dance floor instead. Soon everyone joined in and I just remember the both of us just being so happy in that moment. To this day we still hear our family and friends tell us that it was the most fun wedding they have ever been to, so I think we can say we achieved our goals.
