I’m not sure I could dream up a more romantic wedding than today’s cherry orchard wedding captured by Megan Hayes. Intimately set at the groom’s family orchard, the reception featured wooden farm tables handmade by the couple and their family where they dined with loved ones and danced under the stars.
The theme of our wedding was Rustic Bohemian DIY. Our colors were neutral with pops of burgundy and red. After getting engaged, Alex suggested we tie the knot in his family’s cherry orchard and I jumped at the opportunity. I really loved the idea of the relaxed cozy and intimate setting we could create outdoors.
I love rose gold and had no idea that my great grandmother owned a rose gold watch, or that had been handed down to my mom. I’m not one for tradition but it was really special that my mom gave me such an amazing “something old” to wear on my wedding day.
My favorite part of the day was our ceremony. It was short sweet and a perfect reflection of us as a couple. We had an amazing acoustic guitar player, one of our best friends was brave enough to get ordained and marry us and we exchanged handwritten vows that caused both of us to shed happy tears.
Alex and I purchased our first home after 8 years of dating in December of 2013, and fixing it up ourselves has been a labor of love that the two of us share. He proposed to me with breakfast and bubbly in a bed he built for the two of us. Our DIY house became our DIY wedding. We took on every project we could in 10 months. That was such an amazing experience I wouldn’t trade for the world. The one thing we never wanted to loose site of was that the day was about who we are as a couple and sharing that with our family and friends.
I had been to a bridal event where I saw a long wooden table with a garland down the middle and thought that would fit perfectly down one of the rows in the orchard. We had the best wedding coordinator, who knew Alex and I were on a budget, but also handy, and suggested we think about building the tables ourselves. My amazing husband, father, and brothers-in-law spent their evenings and weekends building, sanding, and staining seven twelve foot long tables for our big day and I couldn’t be more grateful. It felt perfect to break bread with our families and closest friends in a space we both loved and had put so much love into.
From building tables, a bar, corn hole games, and Giant Jenga to hanging cafe and twinkle lights and weed whacking we literally put blood sweat and happy tears into our wedding. What Alex and I didn’t realize was how much we would love the planning process and how it would provide such an amazingly creative way for us to collaborate and create a day that expressed who we are as a couple.
