I love berry tones and a berry themed wedding is so perfect for summer. From the colors to jam favors to a berry filled cake, this wedding from Katie Slater is completely filled with sweet fruits.
I really wanted our wedding to have a dreamy elegance to it, a classy and romantic atmosphere that felt intimate and cozy. The venue we chose was the one and only we saw in person: an hour north of the city in the heart of the Hudson Valley, the Highlands Country Club had everything we were looking for and more. A gorgeous ballroom, hardwood floors, large windows to let in natural light, outdoor space, even a solarium. It was a no-brainer.
The color and theme inspiration came from my love of summer berries. Even though we planned a May wedding, I threw the magazine-recommended Spring palates out the window, and chose deep, rich berry tones offset by light pinks. The cake had a berry compote filling with decorative berries on top, the favors were jams flown in from Washington State, our stationery had a berry motif. The guys and girls were all in different shades of pinks, purples, burgundies, and navies.
The most important detail to me was the photography. We’d decided that we weren’t going to splurge on a videographer, so finding the right person to immortalize our day was a high priority. I was looking for a very specific aesthetic – a romantic, ethereal, almost muted look – when I found Katie, and fell in love with her visual storytelling. And I’m so glad I did! My husband and I are elated at the final results!
I have a serious sweet tooth, so the cake and dessert were of high import, as well. I hated the idea of a flavorless, fondant-heavy, monstrosity for a cake covered in sugar flowers. It needed to taste like actual cake, and look light and beautiful. The final result? A naked cake with lemon-zest vanilla layers, filled with a berry compote and mascarpone whipped cream. Our wedding cake was a present from Tatum’s childhood friend and professional baker, Abby Taylor. Abby flew in from Seattle with cake pans, baked the cake at a friend’s house, and transported it to the venue. It was the most delicious, mouth-watering, gorgeous cake I could have ever dreamed of.
It was especially important to us that our guests had a great time, so we put a lot of effort into making sure the details and logistics were well thought out, that the food was great, and that the music selection was super fun.
