Kelly and John’s destination wedding in Colorado Springs was a fusion of Art Deco glamour and an enchanted forest fantasy, centered entirely around Kelly’s breathtaking green wedding gown. The couple chose The Broadmoor as their venue even before getting engaged, drawn to its European elegance and old-world charm. The date they had their hearts set on was already booked nearly two years out, but they embraced the extended timeline. “It gave us the time and space to plan a wedding where half our guests would be traveling internationally,” they shared. Kelly knew she wouldn’t be a bride who wore a traditional white gown. Dress shopping was Kelly’s first priority, as she knew the gown would define the wedding’s entire aesthetic. She ultimately chose a floral-embellished look that evoked the dreamy forest scenes from Sleeping Beauty, setting the tone for a palette of rich greens and gold. Set against hazy mountain views, the couple exchanged personal vows in an emotional ceremony that left hardly a dry eye among their guests. “It truly felt monumental — to share our journey of surviving an international long-distance relationship, to have so many loved ones travel across the world to celebrate with us, and to commemorate our love story.”

“I had warned John for years before getting engaged that I would not want a white dress. I think friends, family, and even John thought once we got engaged, I would change my mind, but I was steadfast in the idea that I wanted to get married in something blue or green. I don’t have a good reason for this, frankly, call it a gut feeling, or the whims of a moody creative, I have just never liked the color white and am pretty much always wearing all black, so a colorful dress would still be well outside my normal color palette. I realized quickly enough, though, that my dress set the tone for the color palette, so I needed to get it sorted quickly in order to start fleshing out ideas for our big day.”

“My mom and I began the hunt for a colorful wedding gown. We stood in her massive bathroom, carefully trying on dresses, and when she zipped me into the green one I wore on my wedding day, I instantly got emotional. It had the most beautiful floral embellishments and reminded me of the forest scenes from Sleeping Beauty. From there, I used colors from my dress to make a palette that Angie and I were working with: a myriad of greens, gold, black, and white. To keep it easy and not give too much away to our guests, I asked them all to wear black and/or white so that I would still stick out in my own way like a traditional bride in white would.”

“Angie, our planner, knows that if she couldn’t find me on the wedding day, it’s because I ran away with the tablecloth. I was in love with it. From the moment I laid eyes on it at our tasting when she brought a sample, I was giddy to have it be the focal point of our table display.”

“I like to have intention and meaning behind every little silly thing I do, which sounds nice, but ultimately makes my life so much harder. So while not everything was DIY, I had an opinion on how to personalize pretty much everything. For example, I could not seem to settle for a simple poster board, so our seating chart was my bedroom mirror that I then printed everyone’s individual name and table number on. Place cards had the same issue; I wanted them to be unique. I saw a Pinterest photo of agates with calligraphy names on them. I reached out, and the owner lived an hour away in Denver, so that was perfect.”

“Angie with Sapphire Celebrations was so essential to my wedding planning adventure: she got the vision. Not only that, but she improved and refined the vision. She is the architect who brought my Art Deco meets Sleeping Beauty forest fantasy that was roaming around in my head to life.”
