It is the perfect blend of modern and romance for this Alabama fall wedding captured by Eric & Jamie Photography! The bride’s chic flutter sleeve gown gave a touch of whimsy set against the city skyline of their rooftop ceremony.
Since we moved from Philly to Birmingham, AL, right before our wedding, it was important for us to find a venue with an urban feel. Alabama has so many beautiful farm, country club, and estate venues, but none of them felt like “us.” Luckily we were able to find a venue overlooking the city (Vulcan Park) for our ceremony and a warehouse style building (Bridgestreet Gallery and Loft) for our reception. These really set the stage for our fall colored flowers and modern-whimsical vibe.
I knew for my dress that I wanted a whimsical dress that had sleeves and wasn’t too poufy (I love to dance). Despite being picky, I found my beautiful Martina Liana dress right away! The sleeves were added by the alteration specialist. For the bridesmaids and groomsmen we knew we wanted stylish but easy. All of our friends are scattered throughout the country so we knew we needed options that were widely available. For my bridesmaids’ dresses, I chose a website (Baltic Born) and color scheme and let my girls choose their dresses. I love the way the variation in color and fabric looks in photographs. My girls have even reworn them! For the guys we went with blue Generation Tux suits. They were so easy to get shipped to our groomsmen and they looked so sharp. I even ordered the wrong tie color and they sent all the guys replacements within days.
We did several things on our wedding day that helped tailor the day to us. First, we had the bridesmaids get ready at our house while the groomsmen got ready at the Airbnb next door. Our first look was in our backyard and featured our puppy in a mini tuxedo. We also asked a friend to officiate! We chose a friend from college who knows us both well and he was the perfect mix of professional and light hearted. Pairing his humor with our hand written vows created a super personal ceremony that felt perfect for us.
Honestly, seeing everyone you love in one room (and there to celebrate you) is something that’s hard to describe. Seeing my childhood best friend talking with Connor’s cousin at dinner, seeing one of our college friends dancing with my grandpa, and seeing my aunt and new brother in law singing Sweet Home Alabama together are moments neither of us will forget soon. We just wish it could have lasted longer!
Anyone who knows us knows that Connor and I love music and we love food, so we chose to splurge on these things. We chose a popular DJ who had a great reputation for getting the party started (shout out to DJ Prez) and he really took our music taste into account. We also hired a string trio to play for our ceremony and that played perfectly into our whimsical theme. When choosing caterers, we decided to splurge on beef and salmon for a formal seated dinner. Even months after our wedding, our guests still talk about how amazing the music and food were. We also chose to splurge on our photographers, Eric and Jamie. They’re extremely popular in our area and with good reason! We knew these photos would be displayed in our house for decades, so we wanted them to be perfect…and they are!
