This Christmas time wedding featuring a twinkle light filled reception from Katherine Beth Photography is just what we all need! Their traditional Hindu ceremony in their venue’s courtyard was so intimate and sweet.
We wanted it to blend some of the traditional elements of Tamil Hindu weddings and western weddings. Given holiday timing we used white, gold, and warm vibrant reds. Since none of our family was local, we wanted a location that was easy to get to and loved the golden lights at night in the outdoor courtyard at the Horton Grand Hotel.
In addition to family, we both had people we love from different times in our lives who we wanted to see and celebrate with. A testament to the amazing people who have graced our lives, nearly everyone we invited, many who we haven’t seen in years, came to the wedding. We also wanted one of Kumar’s lifelong friends, a “brother”, to officiate the wedding. Rishi in addition to being a friend and family to Kumar is respected among Janani’s family. From a neighboring village in Sri Lanka, Rishi was and is a unique humanitarian in Tamil Sri Lanka, and remains actively involved with the Sri Lankan diaspora in the US.
We did a civil ceremony one year before the actual wedding because our lives were logistically challenging with Kumar’s military deployment and Janani being in med school then residency with essentially no time. We had close family attend and a small backyard party, which was beautiful. The actual wedding ceremony and celebration was no less sacred over a year later. For those who are thinking about planning a wedding in a less than ideal time, consider having multiple celebrations like we did! Think of it as an excuse to celebrate your love and commitment multiple times.
