Continuing our Get the Look series with another famous wedding gown, Wallis Simpson’s famous “Wallis blue” Mainboucher dress.
Wallis Simpson’s famous “Wallis blue” dress was designed by the American designer Mainbocher for her 1937 wedding to Edward, Duke of Windsor. Their wedding may have been scandalous, but her wedding day look was sublimely chic. The gown was long sleeve with a high ‘petal’ neckline with rows of buttons at the shoulders and wrists, accompanied by a jacket with another row of buttons at the waist. It is still in great condition, but unfortunately the blue has faded because of dye instability, so there are no images that convey the gorgeous subtle blue that was Wallis’s favorite color and from her wedding day on, dubbed “Wallis blue”.
Left is the gown as it looks today, the right is a replica by Michael O’Connor for the 2005 film Wallis and Edward
The closest dress I could find that had a very similar long sleeve style and also that blue hue is this dress by Beulah.
This romantic gown from Maria Luisa Rabell also has that soft powder blue color, along with the stylish front buttons.

If you really love Wallis Simpson’s look for the understated elegance, here are some favorites I found that would be perfect.
Wallis wore a gorgeous blue feathered hat, with an almost crown like look in lieu of a veil. Here are some favorites of mine that give that same feel.
What do you think, are you in love with Wallis Simpson’s wedding day look? Would you be bold enough to wear a blue gown on your wedding day? Or do you love the understated elegance of some of the look a likes?
