Handmade Vintage Barn Wedding

With handmade and heirloom details galore, this charming real wedding at the bride’s grandfather’s barn from Lindsay Campbell Photography is one you won’t want to miss! Every detail was thoughtfully hand-crafted by friends and family or a lovely heirloom saved for this important day. I love the great-grandmother’s sewing table used to display the programs! You can really tell that love and family was at the forefront and it made this wedding all the sweeter.

I have always dreamed of getting married at my grandfather’s barn, but I did not necessarily want a country themed wedding. When describing the feel and style of my wedding, my mom, sister, and I used “rustic bohemian”. I chose mauve/blushes as my color with copper accents and all white flowers with a lot of greenery. Tyler and I also wanted our wedding to feel intimate but casual as we are both pretty relaxed and laid-back people.

My mother has collected many keepsakes from my great-grandmothers that we were able to use for decorations at the wedding. My Great-Grandma Floyd (grandfather’s mother) and great aunt made many of the doilies we used on multiple tables. Also, one of her quilts that was hand-pieced and hand-quilted by her was used on the side of the barn. The sewing table used for the programs and guest book was hers as well. My great-grandmother also had a love for flowers that she passed down to my mother and many of the flower buckets were from her. My great-grandmother Gonce’s (grandmother’s mother) gloves and pearl necklace were displayed on the guest book table. Some of my grandfather Floyd’s antique farm equipment was hung on the barn wall inside where the dance floor was. Lastly, my great-grandmother Floyd’s floral handkerchief was my something old, borrowed, and blue.

We are both extremely close to our families, and we wanted to reflect that with our decor and our ceremony. My uncle passed away at 21, before I was even born, and my grandfather began building the barn shortly after as something to keep his mind occupied while he healed. It is a place that has reminded our family to rebuild and work through difficult times which is also an idea we wanted to begin our marriage with. We displayed our families’ wedding pictures at the entrance to our venue to show the growth and love shared throughout our family. Tyler’s aunt also passed away earlier in 2016, and so I painted a sign to place in a seat for her memory. We wanted to celebrate the love we have for our family alongside celebrating the love we have for each other.

I was very anxious the morning of our wedding day because I have a fear of getting up in front of people. Having the first look and getting to spend the rest of my day with Tyler completely calmed my nerves. I also can’t brag on our photographers, Lindsay and Tyler Campbell, enough. They were so personable, humorous, and relaxed that you couldn’t help but feel at ease with them. Also, having a dash of rain for good luck made for some awesome photos and an amazingly cool day for a mid-July wedding.

The barn was built by hand by my grandfather, but even months before the wedding it was still being used for wood and hay storage. My parents, grandparents, siblings, and close friends spent multiple weeks unloading, cleaning, pulling weeds, planting grass, and packing dirt for us to be able to use the barn for a wedding. My father wired the stereo system and lighting himself as there was not any electricity originally. The floral arrangements, bouquets, and boutonnieres were made by my sister’s mother-in-law Kristy Rogers. She is absolutely amazing and does floral arrangements for a hobby. Tyler’s aunt Susan prepared the foods for the reception and does some catering on the side. My sister made the wedding cake and strawberry cake from scratch and also does that for a hobby.

My mom’s house was practically empty the day of the wedding because we hauled out all of her tables to use for serving the food, the guest book, and gifts. For the bicycle display, my mom spray painted my sister’s bike from when she was a teenager with copper paint and attached wire baskets full of flowers she planted and grew. All the potted flowers were planted and grown by her as well. She painted and distressed all the mason jars used for table centerpieces. The fabric banners were all sewn by my mother. We made the programs into fans by purchasing fan sticks online and gluing them by hand. The curtain drapes on the barn were made by my mother and sister and hung up by a small army of people. The baby’s breath wreaths hanging on the barn doors were made by hand by my mom and Kristy. The cake stands were also wooden trays made by my grandfather turned upside down.
