Elegant Heirloom Wedding

Sharing this classic and sweet heirloom wedding from Allison Maginn today! The whole wedding was filled with special details and tons of family tradition. All the silver pieces in the centerpieces are family heirlooms (some dating back to the 1800’s) and make the perfect contrast to the bright and colorful table-scape.

Our ceremony was at Saint James Episcopal Church. David and I both went to preschool at Saint James, making it the perfect place to get married. It was really special because we were the first wedding there since the church had been repainted (it had been over 80 years). We did not do much for decoration at the church (it didn’t need it!), just simple flowers at the altar. We chose to have our reception at The Valley Hunt Club. Both of our families have been members of this club for generations. It was really special to be able to have such an important event at a location we both know so well, grew up at, and feel relaxed and at home.

My wedding ring is an heirloom. When David told his Grandma he was planning on proposing, she gave him the original diamond from her wedding ring. He designed the ring around the diamond especially for me.

My dad passed away about 3 years ago so getting married, especially walking down the aisle, was something I was kind of dreading. In the end it was a breeze because I had both of my older brothers on each of my arms. My mom also made a bracelet for me out of the ring that my dad had given her when I was born. Interestingly, it was a diamond and sapphire ring, so it was my something old, something new and something blue all in one! I borrowed a pair of my mom’s beautiful diamond and pearl earrings for my something borrowed.

Our wedding was outside in a garden so we used that to help us plan colors, themes, etc. The tablecloths were an apple green shantung to match the garden and we had custom mirrored table tops made. The flowers were pink, white and green and we used all family silver pieces as the vases on the tables. We had a bunch of different height candles, some in water, some not, that looked amazing reflecting off the mirrored table tops.

All of the silver that we used for the flowers at the wedding was from my side of the family. It was incredible how much has accumulated over the generations! David, my mom and I spent hours polishing the silver but it was so worth it. We got to really enjoy each piece of silver and had fun trying to figure out where it had come from!

We practiced our first dance a lot. We counted it out and decided when to put in turns and finished with a dip. It was funny because as we were walking up to light the unity candle at our wedding ceremony, David told me that he was going to dip me when we kissed for the first time as a married couple. I thought he was joking… but he definitely did! It was a good thing we practiced so much so that I did not fall! Everything came together perfectly and it could not have been any more amazing. I just wish it could’ve been longer!
