Neutral Winter Wedding

Winter weddings may have their own set of issues (low light and weather troubles), but they always have this magical quality to them. Today’s wedding from Emily Wren is a gorgeous example. The whole look is simple, chic, and utterly lovely. I love all the lush greenery!

Scott and I were thrilled by the chance to throw a party for all the people we love. Our bottom line was to avoid getting stressed out about the planning and to work with people we were excited about.

Erica Maust and Andrew Olson started the tremendous flower company Chicory this fall. They partner with organizations to find abandoned lots in Philadelphia and fill them with flowers. It was wonderful to support the work of these two incredible people. For our winter wedding they foraged greens, forced bulbs, and used succulents for a festive winter look.

We held our ceremony at Willistown Friends, a Quaker meetinghouse in the countryside outside of Philadelphia. I grew up in a Quaker family and Pennsylvania, thanks to its Quaker past, has a provision that allows couples to be married in the “Quaker style.” In a Quaker style wedding the couple marries themselves and the community of friends and family (the guests) act as the officiants. Anyone present can stand and give a message to the couple during the ceremony. It was a wonderful and intimate way to tie the knot.

Philadelphia is full of amazing older spaces with colonial vibes. They’re incredible but we wanted to find a modern space. Power Plant Productions is a converted chocolate factory now a photography studio. Its owned and run by a husband and wife team who rent out the space for exhibits and events. The wife portion of the team, Chris Meck, was incredibly fun and easy to work with. Nothing bothered her and she even invited Scott’s mother to come use the facility’s industrial kitchen to bake our wedding cake.

All in all we couldn’t have hoped for a better wedding day and are grateful for the help of everyone who made it a fantastic party.
