A Yellow and Black DIY Wedding

I always love DIY weddings because they have so many personalized details. Today’s yellow and black mountain wedding is the perfect example! The playful and modern patterns they incorporated are so fun. And how gorgeous are the ranunculus bouquets? Love!

The lovely bride Mercedes shares:

The day was perfect. Everything turned out better than we expected and we wouldn’t have changed one thing.  When we got engaged we said we wanted to keep it small, have a gathering with our closest friends and family and stick to our budget….We set a tight one and we were going to stick to it!  We set boundaries and asked what was important to us for our day what wasn’t and we crossed those things off our list.  We wanted to create a day that was truly us.

We chose our colors to be yellow, black and white.  (Brad later decided that he was wearing a gray suit. Which in the end, looked stunning).  I was afraid of it being to bumblebee-ish, but I wanted to stray from the normal white or ivory back drop for a wedding.  We priced beautiful black and white table cloths through our venue and they were $800 for the day.  That wasn’t an option!  We went with standard black floor length table cloths and I found a modern, funky black and white patterned fabric which my mom made the table squares out of at the cost of $150.  Later on, she is going to make table napkins out of the table sqaures, so they will have some sentimental meaning.

Once the big decisions were made, Brad told me to run with it.  He wasn’t really into all of the little details like I was.  I wanted to keep things modern and simple, with little touches of color here and there.  Anything that was left on our list and was a necessity I asked myself how I could make it on my own to keep it cost effective.  The DIY projects and my mom’s sewing skills also helped us put everything together so it matched and we could add our own touch.  My mom made our daughter, Tinsley’s dress which turned out great!  She looked adorable in it.  We made the card box, table numbers, painted the branches in the centerpieces and added a black ribbon around each vase, the basket in the ladies room, the ribbon around each layer of the cake, and the letter F made out of buttons that hung behind the bar.

Our favorite parts of the day were taking a pre-cermony picture but without seeing each other.  Our photographer Jillian already had Brad in place on one side of the barn.  She then had me walk along the other side of the barn so Brad couldn’t see me.  It was nice to take a moment before the ceremony to hold hands and hear each others voices without everyones eyes on us.  One of my favorite memories was seeing our little girl, Tinsley right before I walked down the aisle, she pointed to me and gave a huge smile. I think we both enjoyed hearing her babbles throughout the ceremony and helped us release some nervous energy.  After the ceremony, it was a great feeling to walk down the aisle as husband and wife. The hard work was over.  It was time to sit back relax, and enjoy the rest of our day with the closest and most important people in our lives.  The reception went so smoothly and everyone ate, drank and danced the night away.
